2012 AVENGER, MAGNUM
Sold out
Avenger is the wine that launched the brand back in 2001. Each vintage of Avenger starts with a Syrah foundation, that’s blended with Mourvèdre and Grenache. A portion always rests in new Hungarian oak for a dollop of spice. Luna Matta Vineyard Syrah and Mourvèdre are the stars of this year’s Avenger. We have come to love Luna Matta not only for the sheer beauty of the site, but the depth and character the fruit offers. Grenache from James Berry Vineyard is the cherry on top.
This wine appears dark and brooding in the glass but then entices you with an intoxicating nose of vanilla scented fruits, wet clay, graphite, cocoa, and plum. The palate is forward and seamless with a rich texture of brûléed berries in a butter crust, curing spices (ginger, coriander, cinnamon, and clove), minerals and black tea.
Circle the wagons for an evening and crack one of these with a grass fed steak au poivre and carmelized au gratin potatoes. Drink now through 2025.
“The 2012 Avenger is a bit softer than most of the other wines in the range, which makes it an excellent choice for drinking over the near term. Here the fruit is round, sensual and seamless, while the aromatics are a bit subdued for a wine done with 60% whole clusters. The blend is 60% Syrah, 30% Mourvèdre and 10% Grenache. 92 points” ~ Antonio Galloni
