Ellis and Susie Bassetti graciously offered us a few tons of grapes after years of hounding them in 2009. Our fascination with the Syrahs from cooler climates brought us to them. Bassetti Vineyard is located 4.3 miles from the Pacific Ocean so the growing conditions are extremely different from those of our Paso Robles vineyards. Syrah shows well in many different regions but it is most complex when grown in cooler sites. Though a very luscious wine, this is NOT your ripe rich, fruit bomb of a Syrah. It screams black currants, rocks, tapenade, and white pepper. It is a savory beast that is most comfortable with braised meats and root veggies on a cold evening. This is another one we don’t want to let go of as only 44 cases were produced.
