2017 MAHA Understory

65% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, 5% Carignan. As many of you know, Grenache is the lions share of planted acreage here at the MAHA. We have a total of 6 acres in three different blocks. The Grenache in the 2017 Understory is a combination of Fanny’s block and Jack Rabbit block. Fanny’s is a Spanish clone right above the winery that adds bright fruits and structure. Jack Rabbit is a French clone planted at a slightly lower elevation with south east exposure adding complexity and savoriness. Both are unique in their own right, bringing different nuances to the blend. 2017 gave us enough Mourvèdre to be able to bring it into the mix (SO excited). Mourvèdre compliments the Grenache with its darker fruit profile and lower acidity. And let us not forget a bit of Carignan to add a distinct umami component that takes things to the next level. The ruby red slippers color is the first sign that says “I don’t think we’re are in Kansas anymore”. A ethereal bouquet of licorice, camphor, cherry Luden’s, dried flowers, and nori flows into a seamless beauty sporting intensity and fine tannins. It has you clicking your heels until the bottle is gone! Drink 2020-2033

2017 Roussanne, James Berry Vineyard

100% Roussanne. Irresistible aromas and flavors of salted caramel pear tart with a butter crust are followed by marzipan and white pepper spice. This is a medium to full bodied white that we love to drink with oil poached tuna with almonds and raisins. Don’t hesitate to serve this wine at the end of your meal perhaps with vanilla poached pears and cheese. Drink now through 2029. This is a fun one to track so stock the cellar!

"Limpid straw-gold. An intensely perfumed bouquet evokes fresh, mineral-tinged pineapple, pear, orange zest and white flowers, along with a deeper suggestion of honey. Energetic, palate-staining tropical and orchard fruit and honeysuckle flavors show superb depth while betraying little excess fat. The mineral note builds steadily as the wine opens up and drives an extremely long, focused finish that features lingering floral, tropical fruit and smoky mineral notes." 94 pts Josh Raynolds, Vinous

"Distinctive and rich up front, this white is lush, oozing with notes of apricot preserves, honeysuckle and ripe peach. Full-bodied, but featuring a wonderfully fresh thread of acidity weaving in and out. Finishes on lingering accents of nutmeg and tobacco. Drink now. 200 cases made."    92 pts The Wine Spectator
