2014 Boa Vista Syrah
100% Syrah. The North Eastern spices on the nose and palate lead to a spicy, savory, earthy wine. In a blind tasting, you would almost mistake this for an unadulterated old world cab. Capsicum, gooseberry and pencil shavings on the palate read like a redwood forest in a glass. This wine has so much going on. It’s no wonder Ballard Canyon Syrah has such a great reputation.
"Coming from the sandy soils of Ballard Canyon in Santa Barbara County, the 2014 Syrah Boa Vista Vineyard sports a vibrant purple color to go with stunning aromas and flavors of crème de cassis, black raspberry, pepper and assorted violet and floral characteristics. Focused, fresh, elegant, medium to full-bodied and with a firm edge to its structure, it should benefit from short-term cellaring and have 10-12 years of overall longevity." 91 - 93 pts - The Wine Advocate
2014 Slide Hill Syrah
100% Syrah. Syrahs from cooler climates continue to captivate us. Years ago, Bob and Luisa Lindquist of Qupé and Verdad wineries would feed our curious minds with their trials and tribulations of biodynamic farming as they brought up a new vineyard in Edna Valley. While we were sorry to hear of their Slide Hill Vineyard changing ownership, we were thrilled when the new owner, Brook Williams, offered us a block of Syrah grapes. Not only does this vineyard hold a Demeter biodynamic and organic certification (check the farming practices box), it is a stone’s throw from Alban Vineyards (check the location box). Our block is on a west facing slope, 6 miles from the Pacific, planted to the Estrella clone of Syrah. As anticipated, these combined factors have resulted in a wine of tremendous character that is truly reflective of its place of origin. The electric magenta rim of this dark plum colored beast beckons for sunglasses. Insane aromatics of incense, cured meats, gingered boysenberry pie, and coastal fog entice one to a smoked chocolaty palate that finishes with gobs of black pepper spice. Massive concentration and richness are balanced by seamless tannins and purity making a wine that gives pleasure in the near term but will evolve beautifully in the cellar. Drink 2016-2026.
2015 Slide Hill Syrah
100% Syrah. The oceanic and volcanic soils of the Edna Valley produce a totally different flavor profile than the rocky limestone hills of west Paso Robles. In the glass it is a deep, true red. Grilled blackberries on the nose lead to a palate of cola, anise and peppered meat. It is at once complex and decadent with an expansive palate. Delicious now but feel free to lay it down for a few years. The perfect pairing would involve game birds, blackberry reduction, a wood fired grill and of course good friends!
