The Light and The Dark

The Light and The Dark

+ 2 Villa Creek | MAHA stemless wine glasses

2017 MAHA Understory

65% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, 5% Carignan. As many of you know, Grenache is the lions share of planted acreage here at the MAHA. We have a total of 6 acres in three different blocks. The Grenache in the 2017 Understory is a combination of Fanny’s block and Jack Rabbit block. Fanny’s is a Spanish clone right above the winery that adds bright fruits and structure. Jack Rabbit is a French clone planted at a slightly lower elevation with south east exposure adding complexity and savoriness. Both are unique in their own right, bringing different nuances to the blend. 2017 gave us enough Mourvèdre to be able to bring it into the mix (SO excited). Mourvèdre compliments the Grenache with its darker fruit profile and lower acidity. And let us not forget a bit of Carignan to add a distinct umami component that takes things to the next level. The ruby red slippers color is the first sign that says “I don’t think we’re are in Kansas anymore”. A ethereal bouquet of licorice, camphor, cherry Luden’s, dried flowers, and nori flows into a seamless beauty sporting intensity and fine tannins. It has you clicking your heels until the bottle is gone! Drink 2020-2033

"Glistening ruby. Energetic, mineral- and spice-accented aromas of ripe red/blue fruits are complicated by suggestions of succulent herbs and pungent flowers. Broad and fleshy on entry, then more taut in the midpalate, offering juicy black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and a suggestion of five-spice powder. Finishes very long and subtly sweet, with slow-building tannins, a touch of smokiness and repeating spice and floral character." 96 pts - Vinous Media

2018 Roussanne, James Berry Vineyard

2018 Roussanne James Berry Vineyard is golden straw in color boasting intoxicating aromatics of grilled white nectarine, flint, fresh bread and white flowers. The palate walks a perfect line between power and grace. Stone fruits are complicated with honeysuckle, thyme, and lemon zest finishing with a nervy intensity that has you salivating for that next glass. Stock up on this one as it will be tough to keep your hands off of and will cellar for a decade or more. Drink 2020-2035

"Translucent yellow. Penetrating aromas of fresh orchard and pit fruits are accompanied by hints of chalky minerals, tarragon and pungent flowers. Juicy and concentrated in style, offering Meyer lemon, pear nectar, white peach and honeysuckle flavors that show fine definition and energetic lift on the back half. The floral note repeats strongly on the finely etched finish, which hangs on with impressive, mineral-tinged persistence." 94 pts - Vinous Media
