2011 Aglianico, Luna Matta Vineyard

100% Aglianico, certified organic. This is our second bottling of this obscure grape that is gaining traction here in California. Not for the faint of heart, Aglianico offers layers of fruit, spice, tannin and intrigue.  Ripe dark cherries, soft worn leather, tree bark, and camphor are complicated in this vibrant garnet elixir.  On the palate, baked berry pie, cinnamon, and cedar are framed by white pepper and firm yet engaging tannins.  This one is just a babe. Decant for several hours and watch the genie emerge.  Make sure you have your three wishes in mind.  Drink 2015-2025

“Villa Creek’s 2011 Aglianico Luna Matta Vineyard explodes from the glass with blueberry jam, grilled herbs, cassis, menthol, violets and lavender. An exotic, thrilling wine, the 2011 boasts superb depth and richness to match its opulent, full-bodied personality. The 2011 Aglianico was done with 60% whole clusters and aged in French oak, 25% new. Paso Robles meets Campania in a dazzling wine that will provide plenty of thrills over the next decade or more." 94 pts - Vinous Media

2012 Cabernet Sauvignon, Carver Vineyard

100% Cabernet Sauvignon. The 35+ year old vines at Carver set a small crop and ripen at their own pace up on the windswept slope on York Mountain. e beauty of this site is that it produces Cabernet Sauvignon that tastes like the classic Cabernets of old. In the glass aromas of currant, camphor, pencil shavings, forest oor and juniper berries meld together. e palate engages the senses with layers of creme de cassis, blackberry, espresso, and nicely integrated oak. is is a seamless and seductive beast that should delight for many years to come. Melt-in-your-mouth, slow smoked Maha Estate pork ribs would be a pleasure with this wine. Drink 2015-2030

“Glass-staining ruby. Ripe cherry and cassis on the nose, with hints of tar and woodsmoke emerging slowly. Broad and fleshy on entry, then tighter and chewier in the mid-palate, offering bitter cherry and dark berry favors with complicating nuances of chewing tobacco and rose pastille. Fine-grained tannins build steadily on the long, focused finish, with the tobacco and floral notes echoing.” 91 pts - Vinous Media

2013 Garnacha

100% Grenache. The 2013 Garnacha is equal parts Denner Vineyard and Luna Matta Vineyard Grenache. In the glass the wine shows a vibrant garnet hue. Aromas of black cherries, anise and a hint of California Bay lead to a bold, juicy palate that shows beautiful purity and precision. Chocolate covered violets and caramelized bacon fat are followed by white pepper spice that lingers. The mouth feel is both juicy and grippy. Enjoy it (like we did!) with Pamplona chorizo and Mt. Tam cheese and Mary’s Black Pepper Seed Crackers. Drink 2015-2025

“Bright ruby-red. Spicy, mineral-accented aromas of cherry and cassis, with licorice, mineral and cracked pepper nuances in the background. Juicy, penetrating red and dark berry flavors show a refreshingly bitter edge and pick up a floral nuance with air. Closes with gentle tannic grip and very good clarity, leaving spicecake and smoky mineral notes behind. This wine reminded me a lot of a high-class example from Priorat.” 93 pts - Vinous Media

2013 Willow Creek Cuvée

70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre. James Berry Vineyard Grenache and Mourvèdre are blended with Denner Vineyard Grenache and Luna Matta Vineyard Syrah. This wine is built to be a crowd favorite with the three b’s - beauty, brains, and body. A luscious engaging nose of dark red fruits, tar, cocoa and caramelized pork fat introduces the voluptuous yet muscular mouthfeel. The juicy blue and red fruits, wild herbs and crushed violets finish with a hint of white pepper. Maha Estate lamb with mushroom walnut cream would be a delightful pairing. This wine will knock your socks off! It will be tough to keep hidden from your friends. Drink 2015-2028

“Vivid ruby. Smoky raspberry and floral pastille aromas are lifted by an assertively spicy nuance. Pliant, ripe and broad on entry, then tighter in the middle, offering sappy, concentrated red fruit flavors that become more expressive with aeration. Shows excellent clarity on the finish, which features smooth tannins and an echo of sweet candied flowers.” 92 pts - Vinous Media

2014 Avenger

80% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre, 10% Grenache. Avenger is always our Syrah focused blend that can be relied upon to provide that rich, jammy red wine experience. This year’s Avenger brings Syrah from a new vineyard into the mix. We were turned on to G2 Vineyard by our friend Justin Smith of Saxum. G2 sits a mile southeast of James Berry Vineyard and is also in the Willow Creek District of west Paso Robles. The new owners have re-purposed this property from a larger production vineyard to a low yield farm of high quality Rhone varietals. Seductive aromatics of grilled jamón wrapped plums are enhanced by blackberry and espresso notes. A super sexy palate reveals boysenberry pie, chamborde, roasted meats, and spice all framed by gorgeous supple tannins. This wine is ready to rumble though will cellar with the best of them. Drink 2016-2025

“Bright purple. Powerful mineral- and spice-accented black and blue fruit aromas show impressive clarity and pick up sexy floral and incense nuances as the wine opens up. Sweet, sappy and incisive, offering palate-coating boysenberry and cherry compote flavors and hints of succulent herbs and candied flowers. Impressively rich yet vibrant, finishing on a juicy blue fruit note with sneaky tannins and superb persistence.” 94 pts - Vinous Media

2014 High Road, James Berry Vineyard

50% Syrah, 30% Mourvèdre, 20% Grenache. High Road is always a blend of our best barrels off of James Berry Vineyard located in the Willow Creek District on the west side of Paso Robles. This vineyard is notable for its south west exposures and elevations down in the coastal fog zone allowing for long slower ripening. The Smith family is among the most progressive growers in the region and we are both thrilled and flattered to be one of the few wineries with acreage under contract here. High Road was fermented with 80% whole clusters and aged in a combination of new and neutral oak. This wine exhibits a beautiful not quite opaque magenta in the glass. Bright focused aromatics of red stone fruits, underbrush, and cocoa transcend to a generous palate of macerated plums and brown sugar crusted berry crumble. The savory notes and texture of High Road desire some cellar time but your patience will be rewarded in spades. Drink 2016-2028

“Inky ruby. Ripe cherry, dark berry preserves, incense and candied licorice on the deeply perfumed nose; a smoky mineral quality adds vivacity. Broad, sweet and seamless in texture, offering deeply concentrated black and blue fruit, rose pastille and spicecake flavors and a subtle touch of cola. Shows outstanding energy and focus on the endless, alluringly sweet finish, which is given shape by slow-building tannins and sharpened by a jolt of juicy acidity. The marriage of power to finesse is really impressive.” 95 pts - Vinous Media
