Avenger is growing up a bit here in this vintage. Don’t be afraid. It still has all of the yumminess that you have grown to love but it has an additional savory layer coming from the portion of whole clusters in the fermentation. The Luna Matta Syrah was fermented 50% whole cluster and aged in 70% new French barriques. The Mourvèdre came from both Luna Matta and Denner and were aged in neutral barriques. The Grenache came off of Denner and was aged in neutral puncheons. Aromatically, cassis and cocoa evolve into tree bark and leather. The palate starts with a blast of kirsch and black fruits and moves to a cinnamon scented pie crust leaving me salivating for the next round of flavors. This wine is always evolving in the glass. Lay this one down for 6-8 months. For those of you who can’t wait, give it a double decant and watch it evolve over the evening. This wine should gracefully age 10-15 years.
